41L42 alloy steel grade is a precipitation hardening alloy steel, containing chromium content as part of its alloying elements. It has relatively high hardenability and its chromium content provided it with excellent hardness penetration. In addition, it also has molybdenum content that imparts uniformity of its high strength and hardness.
This alloy steel grade exhibits self-scaling characteristics which make it highly suitable for forging. It can respond readily to heat treating procedures and can be easily machined in the heat-treated state. This alloy steel also has resistance to creep up to 1000℉ and has the ability to maintain properties even right after long exposures at high working temperatures.
41L42 alloy steel are coupled with highly desirable properties such as wear-resistance and good strength as well as good ductility and resistance to stress at highly elevated temperatures. It is usually used in the received condition but it is heat-treated normally before using. This alloy steel grade has better-improved machinability but shouldn’t be used in temperatures 400℉. High temperatures can lower ductility in leaded alloy steel grades.
Such alloy steels work well in screw machine applications. They are widely used and are considered as highly successful alloy steels.
Their common applications include the following:
