15-5 PH Stainless Steel

15-5 PH Stainless Steel Bar

(UNS S15500) 15-5 PH stainless steel, a martensitic precipitation hardening steel, is specially designed to surpass the strength 0f 17-4 PH (UNS S17400) stainless steel grade.

15-5 PH Stainless Steel15-5 PH stainless steel, referred to as UNS S15500, is a precipitation hardening type of grade that belongs to martensitic class. It is considered as a modification of older 14-4 PH chromium-nickel copper precipitation hardening stainless steel. 15-5 PH is known to have a more refined microstructure which is obtained by a remelting process. The refined microstructure enhances the material’s toughness.

15-5 PH exhibits low-temperature hardening, excellent corrosion resistance, and good fabrication properties, making it suitable for numerous industrial applications. This stainless steel grade can be machined in the final heat treat condition or in the solution-annealed state. Its ductility and strength are enhanced by heat-treating the material at varying temperatures. This type of stainless steel grade is specially designed to become highly hardened and corrosion resistant through heat treatment.

This grade can provide good mechanical properties such as high strength and good corrosion resistance at a high-temperature level that’s up to 600o F (316o C) as well as better toughness in both welds and base metals. Material’s scaling and distortion are minimized through short time, low temp heat-treating procedures. UNS S15500 is specially designed to have much greater toughness than 17-4 PH in short transverse direction.

15-5 PH stainless steel is mainly used in applications requiring high transverse strength, better corrosion resistance, and toughness similar to that of martensitic steels.

This stainless steel has its significant use in the following industries and parts:

  • Fittings and gears
  • Hallow shafts
  • Valves
  • Fasteners
  • Aircraft components
  • Paper mill equipment
  • Marine gas turbine compressor sections
  • Engine parts
  • Nuclear reactor components
