The 86l20 Bar

86L20 Steel for Precision Engineering

Stainless Steel Bar

86L20 bar steel is a triple alloy carburizing steel known for its excellent ductility and durability. It contains molybdenum and chromium, which provide exceptional wear resistance and hardness.

This alloy steel grade is popular for its strong tough core and high case hardness in carburizing applications. The addition of lead content “L” significantly improves finish, machinability, and tool life, while also increasing part production by up to 25 percent. Heat treating procedures are employed to achieve the desired case depth and optimal hardness.

Reasons to choose 86L20 steel

The additional lead content enhances machinability, while the alloyed nickel imparts ductility and good toughness. The presence of molybdenum and chromium increases wear ability and hardness penetration. These alloyed elements contribute to the production of high case hardening and a strong tough core.

Furthermore, 86L20 steel exhibits good welding qualities. As a leaded alloy steel grade, it doesn’t require sacrificing other desirable properties to improve machinability. However, it is not recommended for applications exceeding 400°F due to reduced ductility at elevated temperatures.

This leaded alloy steel grade finds great utility in various applications, including spline shafts, oil pump jigs, pinions, gauges, plastic molds, crankshafts, gears, and ring gears.

Here are its advantages:

  1. Higher strength-to-weight ratio and corrosion resistance compared to other steel types.
  2. Laser cuttable without surface damage.
  3. Suitable for harsh conditions such as marine, oil and gas drilling, and offshore construction.
  4. Useful in the aerospace industry for aircraft undercarriage components.

86L20 steel is a popular choice for structural applications, found in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings due to its long-standing durability and strength. It possesses several properties that make it an excellent option for construction projects.

Key properties of 86L20 Bar

86L20 bar is a high-strength alloy with a carbon content of 0.3%. It has been widely used in the construction industry for many years. Although it shares similar properties with other types of steel, its manufacturing processes may result in variations in hardness and softness.

The 86L20 steel equivalent offers high corrosion resistance and good toughness, making it suitable for both structural and non-structural applications. It is commonly used in bridges and skyscrapers due to its affordability and ease of workability compared to other steel types.
