455 stainless steel (UNS S45500) is a highly advanced martensitic alloy with the better combination of mechanical and physical properties. This type of stainless steel grade combines ease of fabrication, corrosion resistance, yield strength, and one-step age hardenability. 455 steel grade is known to have the strength which is three times stronger than standard stainless steel grade 304.
One-step aging treatment is used to provide the material with super high yield strength coupled with toughness and good ductility. This stainless steel grade can stay extremely stable while being heat treated in order to machine it to its close tolerance prior to aging.
455 stainless steel is a general-purpose steel grade. It can be used in corrosive environments where both standard austenitic and martensitic grades fail when it comes to strength and corrosion resistance requirements. It uses feeds and speeds which are comparable with other martensitic stainless steels. Slow feeds and positive feeds can bring out the best results.
Preheating material is not really necessary. Both its shielded fusion methods and resistance are commonly employed. Aging material after welding is recommended to gain the best properties. 455 stainless steel can be machined successfully with the use of the same methods utilized for other high-strength alloys just like work supports, positive cuts, strong tool, slower speeds, and a good quantity of coolant.
455 stainless grades are formable and soft in their annealed condition. This steel grade is machined during its annealed condition and is welded in the same manner with other precipitation-hardenable stainless steel. With its low work-hardening rate, 455 can be cold formed. The 455 is considered as a significant advancement in the precipitation hardening stainless steels area.
