It has contained levels of molybdenum and chromium which give exceptional wear resistance and hardness. This alloy steel grade is one of carburizing alloys mostly used for its strong tough core and high case hardness. The added lead content “L” plays significantly in adding a great finish, machinability, and tool life – it also boosts part production up to 25 percent. Heat treating procedures are used to help it achieve case depth and optimal hardness. The additional lead content grants it with an improved machinability. In addition, the material is also alloyed with nickel which imparts ductility and good toughness while the molybdenum and chromium increase wearability and hardness penetration.
