Nitronic 60 is an all-purpose stainless steel. It belongs to the austenitic stainless steel group which exhibits yield strength coupled with corrosion resistance that is two times stronger than 304 steel grade. This steel also has exceptional high-temperature oxidation resistance as well as outstanding galling resistance.
This austenitic stainless steel was originally designed as temperature alloy which subsequently has better high-temperature properties at temperatures around 1800°F. This steel is alloyed with elements including silicon and manganese which granted the alloy with the ability to inhibit galling, wear, and fretting even in the annealed condition. The material attains high strength through cold working and can be fully austenitic even after severe cold working.
Cold working, however, does not improve anti-galling properties like in regular carbon steels and stainless steels. The advantage of cold working to Nitronic 60 is the added hardness and strength. The high mechanical strength found in annealed parts allows the use of cross-sections reduction for weight and reduces cost through using a thinner stock.
Nitronic 60 stainless steel are suitable materials for infrastructure projects like that of bridge pins, wear plates, and expansion joint hangers for highway construction; wicket gate wear rings and stems for hydroelectric dams. This alloy is also used in applications in pharmaceuticals, sanitary equipment, and in food processing where lubricants are not used.
In addition, Nitronic 60 can also be used in oil and gas production as well as in chemical and petrochemical plants for seats and trim seals, valve stems, pump wear rings, bushings, etc.
